LECCE

Lecce rises out of the broad plain on the spur of a peninsula.
Just miles from the Adriatic beaches and the Ionic coast, Lecce is more than a beach resort -- it is also a most singular example of a Baroque styling. Local materials have given a unique turn to classic Baroque invention. The intricate stone inlay work was crafted of the Salento area's friable porous volcanic tufa, which lends a curious light to the finished works. As regards its reputation as conservator of its natural and artistic wealth, Lecce claims a superior position to many of its southern confederates. This distinction extends to the graciousness and sophistication of its inhabitants, as well as its prosperity.
It is a city with a noble history which still pulses throughout its streets today.

BAROCCO LECCESE

The term 'baroque' is commonly used to describe that which is strange, exceptionally bizarre, and designates the artistic sentiment predominant in Rome around 1630.

It's most prominent creative forces were Bernini, Borromini, and Pietro della Cortona among others.
Both monarchy and church trusted to art to immortalize their glory, wanting very much to leave an indelible mark on history.
Lecce has always been considered the most noble city in Puglia, much admired (and perhaps a bit envied) for the fine cultural heritage reflected in its churches and palazzi.
The period from the late 1500's to the mid-1600's marks Lecce's finest hour and there are many fine palazzo's and religious buildings remaining to testify to its rich past. Lecce's 'barocco' is quite singular, in that it developed outside the standard, historical time-frame the artistic period.

LECCE AND SALENTO AREA

Salento: art, history, uncontaminated wilderness twine together to create a happy surprise for travellers venturing into this unusual vacation destination.
Arriving in Lecce, visitors are immediately struck by the warm and delicate yellow tones of the local masonry, so carefully worked by the hand of Baroque masters.
Lecce, is indeed a refined and precious Baroque gem, offering its citizens and guests a delicate brocade of wondrous sights: a play of light and shadow, the vine-laced contours of a well, the leaves of an ancient capital, a cherub's wings, the confines of the spacious Cloister of S. Cataldo.

The city's winding alleyways pass by the Chiesa di S. Croce, the magnificent Piazza Duomo, and the ruins of the Roman amphitheater.

Looking upwards, visitors can admire the lovely balconies, windows and doors all decked out in stony floral garlands. Lecce, city of talcum powder is different from its neighbors, a most unusual place, both ancient and noble, elegant and refined, rich in history and culture.
Along the 'paesaggio delle pietre' there are fortified farms, relics of architectural history. Paying a visit to one of these sites is like stepping into the past. The nucleus of these structures is the large courtyard surrounded by a high wall, often dominated by a tower. Some of these old structures still retain their sentry boxes, drawbridges, underground bunkers, wells and paved threshing floors and. The fortifications were built as a defensive measure some time in the middle of the 16th century. All of them are characteristically square at the base, gradually forming a pyramid: Torre S.Foca, Torre dell'Orso, Torre S. Andrea, Torre S. Emilano, Torre Vado, Torre Mozza, Torre Roccavecchia...

Arriving in 'Greek Salento' (Martano, Castrignano dei Greci, Pisignano, Corigliano, Sternatia, Zollino), visitors will be delighted to find vestiges of the early Greo-Byzantine empire.

In this area, where 'griko' is the local dialect, the ancient Hellenic roots still run deep and many local traditions date back to this period.
It is evident in the stone churches and the monolithic settlements; in the Roman monuments erected in honor of the Pre-Hellenic civilization; in the Magna Grecia with its medieval castles; in the Paleochristian crypts adorn with ancient frescoes; in the Baroque churches in all their glory.
Lecce and Salento have to be explored to be fully understood. The lucky traveller who can discern the true identity of the region is sure to be smitten with the desire to return for a yet more profound exploration of the soul of Salento.

SALENTO'S COASTAL REGION

Without doubt, Salento's 250 km of coastline is of great importance to the area, not only in terms of tourism.
It's beauty comparable to that of Sardinia and Greece.

The beaches line the Mediterranean (from the Torre dell'Orso to Otranto), roll sensually along, and support a host of jet-setters (who prefer Porto Cesareo, Gallipoli, Otranto and Torre dell'Orso).

The quiet little coves and bays of Specchiulla, baia dei Turchi, Porto Badisco, Sant'Emiliano, Porto Selvaggio and Bagni Selvaggi are sheer magic.
Visitors who don't want to look far and wide for an secluded beach could do much worse than S. Cataldo, just 13 km from Lecce. Known as the beach in Lecce, it is also the site of an antique Roman port, the Porto Adriano.

Following along the seemingly endless shore, hikers will come to Torre dell'Orso, heralded by the sight of a huge cliff which plummets to the sea.
Torre dell'Orso is a tourist center, well-organized and equipped with bathing facilities, restaurants and hotels.

Nearby, to the east, is Otranto. Sights to see are the stupendous cathedral built in 1080, the Castello with its Torre Alfonsina, and the ruins of the celebrated Abbazia di S. Nicola di Casole, founded in 900 AD. The impressive bay, Porto Badisco, mentioned in the Aeneid , is close by. Also in the immediate area are the thermal baths of S. Cesarea Terme as well as the Zinzulusa and the Romanelli grotto (with ancient murals).
The charming little village of Castro provides a worthy excursion, with its starkly Medieval imprint best exemplified by the castle and former 12th-century cathedral.
A road atop a peak rising from the sea leads to the gleaming Leuca on the Ristola peak.

Passing the limpid pools and fantastic grottos is beautiful Gallipoli, which stretches along the promontory to include a tiny island in its embrace.

The Ionic coast is marked by inlets snuggled among sandy stretches and jagged cliffs.
The Porto Selvaggio Bay is central among these, located along the Neretina coast.
Your tour winds up at Porto Cesareo, a fishing village thriving on the plentiful bay.
The sunsets are heavenly and the crystalline water beckons a refreshing plunge.

The price includes breakfast and everything such as cleaning and clean linen.
